SHAU

SHAU is an architectural and urban design practice founded in 2009 by architect couple Daliana Suryawinata and Florian Heinzelmann in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and Bandung, Indonesia. Florian is an Associate Professor in Practice at the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore. Daliana was recently featured in RIBA’s ‘100 Women Architects in Practice’. SHAU is recognised for its performance-driven environmental and societal design agendas. Some of SHAU’s awards include ARCASIA 2024, Good Design Japan 2023, ArchDaily Building of the Year 2021, Architizer A+ awards in 2017 and 2020, the Aga Khan shortlist in 2019, Holcim Silver Asia-Pacific in 2017, and Sustainable Firm of the Year (Architecture Master Prize) in 2017. The partners’ multicultural backgrounds and architectural upbringing in various countries, along with their experiences at leading firms and universities in the Netherlands, contribute to the practice’s evidence-based design approach. Key projects by SHAU include the Microlibraries series, multi-programmatic public spaces in West Java, multi-ethnic student housing in Surabaya, Tasikmalaya Creative Centre, the Tropical Vice Presidential Palace in Nusantara, and an ongoing 1,200-seat performing arts center "RuBIK" in Jakarta. SHAU is also actively involved in various cultural and creative events worldwide. Either as curators or contributors, the practice has participated in international exhibitions, masterclasses, lectures, and workshops. Among the events initiated and led by SHAU are the Kota Tua Creative Festival in Jakarta and the Jakarta Vertical Kampung masterclass.
