An additional structure that integrates seamlessly with the original building and a fifth floor were added to increase the number of units. The Art Deco feel has been preserved, yet modernized, by punching out windows and adding balconies. The windows were the structure’s most predominant Deco feature. However, much of the structure consisted of blank, solid walls. To emphasize the applied decoration typical of the Art Deco style, MG2 extended linear forms vertically, incorporating rows of tall glass panes.
The diagonal steel rods of balconies, along with the vertical brick pillars and window mullion patterns, all pay tribute to the Art Deco design. Every unit, from studios to two-level lofts, has access to the outside. Poured terrazzo flooring, flared capital columns, and an electrical transformer vault, all original to the building, have been restored or reimagined. A rooftop lounge and pool with luxury cabanas combined with an interior speakeasy lounge offer sweeping views of the Chicago skyline. 6 Corners Lofts is a successful model for reimagining obsolete retail spaces and transforming them into dynamic, mixed-use environments.
By leaning into design and employing thoughtful adaptive reuse strategies, MG2 has successfully blended modern residential living and retail while preserving, enhancing, and amplifying iconic Art Deco elements for a 21st century sensibility. The Portage Park neighborhood is experiencing an exciting transformation, in large part due to the success of 6 Corners Lofts. Thoughtful adaptive reuse not only supports community revitalization but preserves neighborhood character for future generations.
