In 2014, Buro Koray Duman was given the task to develop a master plan for 250 acres of land in Upstate New York which included buildings and new constructions that needed to provide studios, gallery, art storage and library for artists in residence and a visitor center. The project started with a single building and gradually will grow in time with the foundation’s consolidation. The site had a series of existing barns; a common typology in the area. The new design proposes a series of new small buildings that play with the geometry and materials with programmatic variations.
The first building; a 5,000sf art storage was completed in August 2015. The Barn consists of a main open plan space that functions as art storage and a small mechanical room at the back. The building is placed between existing barns. A new, semi-permeable path leads visitors from the road through existing barn structures to the new building. The path is designed to accommodate trucks for large scale art delivery. The new building is a carefully detailed. Recessed gutters and meticulous detailing provide a minimal profile while custom metal sliding doors at front and metal louvers at the back for mechanical room are made of bespoke details.
The building uses passive building technologies to provide heating and cooling.
