Each building has its own characteristics and eccentricities. The entry building is a one-story wood and brick structure with a mansard-like wood roof showcasing a web of steel structural supports. This building was perfect to house the reception experience, public events, outreach as well as philanthropic ventures. The connecting structure, where most of the staff is located, is a board-form concrete structure with the original steel and glass warehouse windows. By uncovering and celebrating the existing buildings’ many years of remodels, warts, and blemishes, the rawness of the envelope became the backdrop to a more soft and tactile material palette.

This layered approach to the application of materials also helped to strike a fine balance between hard/soft, dark/light, matte/gloss, and feminine/masculine. THE JOY OF THE JOURNEY The joy of the journey was a crucial factor for the design team while planning the entry and level one experience of this innovative environment. Instead of creating a sterile, monotonous space that is solely focused on functionality, the team wanted to create an experience that would be enjoyable for guests, employees, and collaborators alike.

They recognized that people are more likely to feel motivated and inspired in an environment that engages their senses and emotions. The design team achieved this by creating a sequence of buildings, level changes, multi-functional spaces, and character rooms that all flow seamlessly together. The organization and variety of spaces within this environment allow the user to explore while feeling inspired, relaxed, and engaged. Users can freely move from one space to another, searching for the perfect place to hold a group discussion, have an interview, dine, or find a private nook to work.

This freedom of movement encourages creativity and innovation by providing a space that caters to the diverse needs of different individuals. One of the standout features of this environment is the lush green plantscape that adds a pastoral feel and a sense of tranquility while also contrasting the raw concrete and glass envelope. The greenery creates a refreshing and calming atmosphere that enhances the user's experience. The plantscape also serves an important purpose in improving air quality and reducing noise levels, creating a healthier and more pleasant environment for everyone.

While the first floor is intentionally more public-facing, the upper floors get more private and secure when traveling vertically. The upper levels mimic a small village with a combination of organizing devices supporting a variety of diverse communal amenities. A simple diagram delineates areas along a large avenue with a sinuous plaster staircase connecting all floors. Each terminus (east-west axis) features a unique destination: an active shared working courtyard on one side, versus a quiet two-story research library on the other.

As there are many different preferences and working habits the design team created small private work labs to be checked out depending on the task at hand. The private labs resemble a village of huts held down from the ceiling with sculpted roofs that allow light to be bounced further into the interior core.
