It signifies the solemn promise to protect others – a vow so powerful that it transcends even death. Notably, Albania’s historic sheltering of Jews during the Holocaust exemplifies this profound commitment, making it the sole European country to uphold such integrity. Through meticulous research and collaboration with local experts, we distilled Besa into four foundational “Pillars of Besa” – Tradition, Protection, Hospitality, and Honor. Using these pillars as a guide, the project harmoniously integrates architecture, restoration, and museum design to convey Besa both as an externalized societal norm (how Besa is known) and an internalized moral compass (how Besa is felt) deeply ingrained in Albanian culture.

The meticulous restoration of the architecture and artworks within the residence preserves its historical significance as a testament to Besa. Simultaneously, the underground extension immerses visitors in the essence of Besa through a series of interactive exhibits dedicated to each pillar. Each of four immersive spaces are illuminated by pillars that extend through the courtyard, casting natural light into the underground exhibits, and serve as physical embodiments of the Pillars of Besa and as beacons that symbolically announce the museum’s presence to Tirana.

The visitor experience is meticulously orchestrated to evoke the generosity and social commitment intrinsic to the spirit of Besa. Ultimately, all visitors, irrespective of origin, are meant to discover a precious gem in Albania’s cultural landscape and depart with a heightened appreciation for their bonds with fellow members of society.
