What if we could build with materials that don’t pollute our environment? Revered for its strength, accessibility, and durability, concrete is indispensable in construction. However, its primary ingredient, cement, is responsible for up to 8% of the world’s annual CO2 emissions. Prometheus Materials and SOM have partnered to develop a carbon-sequestering Bio-Block—a direct substitute for the carbon-intensive Concrete Masonry Units (CMUs) ubiquitous in modern construction. For the first time, the public can interact with the product at the Bio-Block Spiral installation in Fulton Market during the Chicago Architecture Biennial.
