The Böllenfalltorhalle, constructed in 1964, is a gymnasium built as a single-field sports hall featuring stands and auxiliary rooms, designed to accommodate up to 5,000 people, including 2,100 seats in the stands. The building is used for school and club sports as well as for large cultural events and has significantly contributed to the history of the city of Darmstadt as a permanent part of its sports and cultural scene. For historical and artistic reasons, it is listed in the monument register of the state of Hessen in Germany.
Between 2019 and 2021, the hall underwent a comprehensive architectural and fire safety renovation, during which 1100: Architects were responsible not only for the architectural planning but also for project management. The sports hall is fundamentally symmetrical along its longitudinal axis. Of particular note is the curved barrel roof covering the 20 × 40 m playing field, with its wooden panels that were fully preserved during the renovation. The integrated lights set into the ceiling were replaced and upgraded to the latest technical standards, thereby significantly enhancing the lighting intensity.
Despite the extensive renewal of technical components, the replacement of the entire profile glass façade in the roof area, and the addition of extra smoke and heat extraction openings, the requirements of monument protection for the sports hall were almost fully met. Ideal ventilation is now ensured by what are called long-throw nozzles. Also new is the external control station in front of the hall entrance, which now allows barrier-free access by wheelchair at the push of a button.
