In 1922 architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch refurbished the building on plaza Catalunya, no. 9 with the introduction of a new typology in contemporary Catalan architecture: the office building. He ensured the maximum flexibility for its internal spaces and capitalised on natural light through new large window openings on the external façade. The key strategy of the new LOOM coworking space remodeling for the building, carried out by the SCOB architecture studio, has been to recover the shared values between its past and its future.
In this project SCOB reads and reinterprets some of the aesthetic resources of the time, such as geometric drawings on coffered ceilings and pavements to use them as a resource in the reorganization of spaces, and the enhancement of the heritage façade of Plaza Catalunya. This same strategy is used to make the most of the free heights available, as well as to rediscover the original structures and materials through new "interior windows" made in ceilings and walls. From a programmatic point of view, the workspaces are distributed along the façades, to take advantage of the visuals and natural light, while the collaborative spaces are located at the heart of the layout of the plant.
Thus, the proposal takes advantage of the central area furthest from the built perimeter where people intuitively cross the space, to establish shared work points and reinforce that natural interaction.
