The iconic commemorative project that spans the historical site of over 2300 years in Chengdu, crossing the Longquan Mountain, serves as the prime vantage point overlooking the Eastern New Urban District and Three Forks Lake. It marks the first impression upon arriving at Chengdu's new airport and represents a unique way of welcoming visitors to the homeland of pandas. Infused with the bamboo culture associated with giant pandas, the design creatively incorporates elements of bamboo shoot towers, inheriting and blending the essence of traditional Chinese pavilions.
The bracket sets are reinterpreted as inclined supports resembling bamboo shoots, expressing a sense of escalating tension and rhythmic beauty， and interprets the classic image in the form of modern architecture. The structure is derived from the local intangible cultural heritage – oil-paper umbrellas. Through the interpretation of traditional mortise and tenon joints, the load is transmitted through umbrella-shaped inclined supports to the central core, forming a structural rhythmic beauty that expands layer by layer outward.
Parametric control achieves a naturally proportioned and elegant form in the golden ratio. The project uses locally sourced materials, extensively adopting a novel green building material – high-performance bamboo-based fiber composite. The raw materials are sourced from surrounding impoverished areas, holding significant demonstration value in increasing local bamboo farmers' income and promoting farmer employment. The project has achieved positive societal, economic, and cultural benefits.
