Physics Department Building, University of Tarapacá

The environment on the plain at the foot of El Morro, where the Physics Laboratory project is located, is characterized by a temperate climate with abundant morning fog, which mitigates the high radiation levels at midday and the suspended dust brought by the southwesterly ocean winds at dusk. In this sense, the idea of "wrapping" the building in a textile mesh (inspired by the matting solution at El Agro market) serves multiple environmental purposes: protecting users and their equipment from radiation and dust, moderating the temperature by retaining humidity in the concrete mass; but also cultural purposes by embracing the local ethos through "appropriate architecture."
