The architecture fully shows the aesthetics of “umbrella” , and embodies the Oriental philosophy of following the rule of nature. 108 umbrella rib-style structural columns are combined to create a circular corridor around the periphery of the building, providing an open place for viewing and communication. The round stepped auditorium in the interior, which accommodates 672 seats, is designed with an umbrella-shaped grille ceiling to strengthen the centrality of this gathering space. The "under umbrella" space, shaped by the "umbrella rib" structures and the corrugated curtain wall, integrates the function of shading and encouraging diverse cultural activities.
The "umbrella" becomes a new carrier for communication, a place for lectures, exhibitions, talks and scenery viewing. The entire building appears like an open oil-paper umbrella floating on the water, which allows for interaction between the interior and the outside, people and scenery and also offers an experience of immersing in the artistic, aesthetic and cultural ambience unique to the Jiangnan water town of Shaoxing. The main entrance is set on the second floor on the north, which is conceived as a grass ramp to connect with the square of the teaching building cluster.
It strengthens a sense of ceremony and provides a setting for lecture exhibitions, festival events and graduation photo taking. Through design interventions, the Lecture Hall becomes a diversified culture center and a new spiritual hub in the campus.
