INTRODUCTION Fleinvaer Refugium is an artist residency located in the remote archipelago of Fleinvaer in North-Norway. The project came about as after composer/musician Håvard Lund contacted Tyin Tegnestue Archtects, who in turn contacted Rintala Eggertsson Architects to do a collaborative effort to design and build the project. During the first phase of the design it became evident to everyone involved that a piece of nature so vulnerable, delicate and architectonic in itself had to be saved from excavators and demolition machines by means of planning and re-organization of the programme.
ORGANIZATION As a consequence, each of the functions were given buildings of their own; the sauna on a pier by the waterfront, the main cabins at the bottom of the hill, the workspace at a recess in the hillside and to complete the composition with a reference to the vernacular of the Sami indigenous people in the area, we proposed a small cabin on the top of a column, a Njalla with a view back towards the cluster of buildings and towards the horizon. ARCHITECTURE From the fairly pragmatic approach to the organization of the cluster of buildings, we moved forward in 4 separate design-/build workshops to design and build the structures.
The focus on minimal intervention was similar as before, not least to emphasize the fact that all the building materials had to be transported to the island and once there, they had to be carried by manual force to the site. A natural consequence of that was the choice of wood as a main building material, a material which in addition to be sustainable and carbon-binding is something one can craft on site, which lends to low impact on the environment and low production- and maintenance costs.
