The culture reflected on the client’s website is evident in the JST Harrisburg Production Center’s distinctive design. Rooted in nature, the building’s concept harmonizes form, site connection, and materials. It was realized through a collaboration between Japanese design architect, RYUICHI ASHIZAWA ARCHITECTS & associates, and a U.S.-based partner firm, Arcari + Iovino Architects. The facility integrates seamlessly with its gently sloping terrain, taking on a tree-like configuration. The central “trunk” forms the main corridor, while “branches” extend outward to house meeting rooms, private offices, a pantry, and production areas. The base, featuring the main entrance, welcomes visitors with a serene rock garden and flowing water, offering acoustic and visual benefits. The upward slope of the building follows the natural grade, maintaining a consistent relationship with the site. Interior and exterior views define each branch, with outdoor gardens between sections visually extending indoor spaces. This design reinforces the idea that a constant connection to nature fosters a pleasant working environment. A restrained material palette of concrete, wood, and glass creates a simple yet elegant atmosphere. The structure is framed in locally crafted Douglas Fir heavy timber, with exposed wood columns at window frames and Cypress-clad walls and ceilings, blending seamlessly with the surroundings. A key design goal was to honor the natural environment, shaping the architectural form to enhance the site’s ecological and aesthetic qualities. The one-story office and production building aligns with the terrain, minimizing disruption to the topography. Inspired by nature’s patterns— particularly trees and fractal forms—the structure mirrors branching limbs, combining functionality with environmental harmony. The central corridor’s winding shape adjusts to the landscape, while the branching sections vary in size to suit their functions. This configuration allows ample access to natural views and creates contemplative spaces without losing connection to the building’s core. The integration of indoor and outdoor areas strengthens the bond between the structure and its environment. The surrounding landscape features swales and terraces that anchor the building and facilitate rainwater flow into nearby gardens, reducing strain on sewer systems. Solar load analysis informed the eave depths, optimizing sunlight penetration while minimizing heat gain. These thoughtful solutions ensure that the building is environmentally sensitive, functional, and aligned with the client’s vision. By balancing natural inspiration with practical needs, the JST Harrisburg Production Center achieves a harmonious design that is both beautiful and sustainable. Its connection to the site and respect for the environment reflect a successful collaboration that meets both aesthetic and functional goals.
