"Lazika is a new city in Georgia located on the Black Sea coast. The one hundred meter long Lazika Pier with its 31 meter high landmark sculpture is one of the first structures to mark the beginning of the development of this new metropolis. Located 150 meters into the water, at a distance from the projected city, it functions as a point from where you can look back onto what might become a skyline. The airiness of the project makes it appear similar to skeletons and ruins. The forms appear unfinished in the sense that they allow us to project onto them a completeness not yet achieved or already long lost.
Those projects remain open to individual interpretation and imagination. The gridded structure of the Lazika Pier Sculpture creates flexible volumes that can be modulated by many distinct forces. Design development, structural requirements, remarks by landmark departments, and programmatic infill can be easily adopted without questioning the design process or the overall aesthetic. At this time, Lazika City consists of a boulevard with one small but spectacular town hall and a hotel for young people that was already built some years ago with the new city in mind.
Lazika is a dream of a lively new center for Georgia with a desirable new port for economic growth. The sculpture is as much a part of the architecture of the city to come as it is non-architecture; the trailer to a story in the making. The sculpture with its 31 meter high is built out of 8mm steel plates. Exterior and interior lighting features of Lazika Pier will provide a dynamic and pulsating look to the sculpture."
