MemutAR is a groundbreaking pavilion that fuses bamboo craftsmanship with Augmented Reality (AR), redefining the relationship between tradition and technology. Prefabricated in Bali by master artisans and reassembled in Taiwan using AR-assisted guidance, the project demonstrates how digital tools can make non-standard, craft-intensive architecture globally scalable. By integrating AR into construction workflows, MemutAR empowers artisans in emerging economies, providing them with access to international projects without sacrificing the authenticity of handcraft. MemutAR’s striking form—a dynamically trimmed hyperbolic paraboloid—embodies movement and transformation, echoing its Indonesian namesake, memutar (to rotate, turn, or circulate). Constructed from golden-brown Petung bamboo and enclosed by a pristine white tensile membrane, the structure juxtaposes organic materiality with precise digital fabrication. The AR integration ensures an error-free assembly, enabling complex geometries to be built with remarkable accuracy while reducing reliance on rigid templates and high-tech manufacturing. Beyond aesthetics, MemutAR is a breakthrough in sustainable architecture. Bamboo, a rapidly renewable material, serves as a carbon-sequestering structural system, offering a regenerative alternative to conventional construction. Prefabrication optimizes material use and minimizes waste, while AR enhances efficiency, making sustainable, high-quality design more accessible. MemutAR’s modular construction method allows for disassembly and reassembly in different locations, making it a flexible and adaptable prototype for future deployable architecture in diverse environments. Designed for the World Bamboo Congress 2024, MemutAR functions as an interactive exhibition and community hub, demonstrating the future potential of bamboo and AR-assisted fabrication. Visitors engage via a custom AR app, visualizing its construction process and exploring its adaptability for housing, public spaces, and commercial applications. By expanding the reach of traditional craft through digital innovation, MemutAR redefines architectural production—where craftsmanship, sustainability, and advanced technology converge to shape a new future for global design and construction.
