National Assembly Communication Building

Making a Flexible Public Space: The National Assembly Communication Building aims to be a "Flexible and Open building" that integrates the formal monumentality of the existing masterplan and daily lives. Located in the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Complex, The National Assembly Communication Building is an "Open Place" symbolizing the democratic ideal while respecting the existing masterplan. In addition, various programs and users require a systematic security strategy and spatial flexibility. Creating an Open Green Space to Flexible Place: The National Assembly Communication Building is a four-story building, which intends to be a friendly low-rise embedded in greenery that respects the existing tree line, averaging 30-40ft (10-12m) in height, around the site. Furthermore, the project conforms to the National Assembly's monumental landscape masterplan and preserves the memory of a "forest" by extending the greenery to its roof and preserving the historic Zelkovas. Making Systematic Space through Flexible Layers: The building programs are layered in horizontal zones to accommodate various users and maintain privacy between the programs while maximizing spatial efficiency. The four cores around a courtyard serve appropriate circulation and security per each user group. In addition, the optimized modular structure system allows the building to adapt to future changes flexibly. Creating Communicating Places with Flexible Spaces: The National Assembly Communication Building symbolizes democratic ideals and houses public, media, political, and administrative programs. In response, "Encounter and Communicate" is defined to be the project's overarching theme and spatial identity. Various spaces for meetings and communications are distributed throughout the building, between the programs, inside, and outside. These are places of relaxation and sharing that bridge people to people, spaces to spaces, and nature to the city; and position the National Assembly Communication Building as an open place and building with lively communications.
