Therefore, we kept park's function, we designed barrier-free large stairs as an approach while helped by government. Changing the park that was just for commutation, or taking walk to "place to gather" and "place to respect local culture." ~Architecture Design~ Considering keeping scenery, we kept existing warehouse's appearance, and made large stairs and louver above the entrance. By placing same plant from park in the entrance, we emphasize that it is a part of the park. To make ceiling height striking, we slanted lightings, and placed kitchen and bathrooms in shack.

We did not renovate every detail of the warehouse, but kept part of ceiling and walls, as memories of the warehouse, which was idea of entrepreneur. ~Post-construction Community~ The owner rents warehouses for play, because the owner respects arts and the district. Even though, warehouse has converted, bond between the owner and the district is remaining. Terrace of organic-vegetarian cafe is opened for pets, and nursing room and bathroom for wheelchair users are in the cafe. Activities, such as (event held by ward, aerial dance show, hand drip coffee competition,) koto and shakuhachi concert, or exhibition of traditional crafts, are possible in event space.

Sometimes, wedding ceremony is held with cafe and event space. Because our proposal is simple, there is no limit for usage, and culture and arts from inside and outside of the district are interacting. ----------------------------- Engineering & Exterior design / partly construction Location: Yokokawa Sumida-ku, Tokyo Use: Storehouse → Event space / Park / Restaurant Age of buildings: 50 years Structure: Steel construction (partly wood) + fireproof & quakeproof Area: 400㎡ approx. Completion: June 2012 ------------------------------ ～「仕事を待つだけ」はさみしい、だから「仕事を作ろう、提案してみよう」～ そんな少々図々しくもある「提案」精神、弊社の特徴のひとつかもしれません。こちらの物件との出会いは、仲の良い倉庫不動産屋さんの「おもしろい倉庫があるみたいですよ」という言葉がきっかけ。倉庫のいくつかを演劇の練習用に貸し出したりしている、地域とのつながりや芸術を大事にする地主さんがいるとのことで、ぜひ会ってみたいと出向きました。場所は当時建設中だった東京スカイツリーからも近い、押上の親水公園沿い。その公園が通勤・通学や散歩道として多くの人が行き交うのを見て、その通過導線に「人のたまり」や「地域コミュニティの場」を、その倉庫物件で提案したい、と思いました。 ～提案から２年、さまざまなタイミングが重なり始動へ～ 東京スカイツリーができる直前、墨田区は建設予定地の駅周辺にお店や人が密集し、その周りの地域が空洞化してしまうのではないかと心配していたそうです。また、ちょうど同じ頃、倉庫を持つ地主さんも稼働率を上げたいと考えていたよう。このふたつのタイミングが重なり、「公園からのアプローチをつくる」ことと「倉庫をコミュニティの場に生まれ変わらせる」ことが実現へ向けて動き出しました。特に前者、公共の親水公園に入り口をつくることに関しては、前例がなく大きなチャレンジでした。この案件のように依頼をつくるところから始めると始動まで数年かかることもしばしば。その中で走り出すべき「タイミング」を探し感じ取ることが大切だと思っています。 ～地域の信頼厚い地主さんと仕事をするということ～ 区の持ち物である親水公園からのアプローチを実現させるには、区役所とのやりとりの上、許可をもらうことが必須でした。しかしこの課題は、古くから地域とのつながりを持ち続けてきた地主さんの人脈もありあっさり解決。同じように、区役所のスピードとパワーにも驚きました。管轄が複雑な箇所の工事も、役所が動き出すとあっという間に許可が下りたのです。また、工事は墨田区での評判が高い工事屋さんにお願いしたのですが、こんなにも緊張感があり統率の取れた現場はなかなか見られるものではありません。全体をとおして「地域と直に関わった」「地域のジレンマを解決した」という温かい達成感を強く感じることができたこの案件。地域を形づくる方々とのお仕事は学びが多くとてもやりがいのあることです。 ～空襲を生き延びた「ささや」の看板～ 元倉庫は地域コミュニティの場としてのカフェ＆イベントスペースに生まれ変わったのですが、ひとつだけ昔ながらの雰囲気を醸し出しているものがあります。「𠆢」冠をつけた「さ」の文字の看板です。このささやの看板はなんと90年前のもの、そこが水飴工場だったときのものとのこと。戦時中、その水飴工場を含む地域一帯は空襲で焼けてしまったのですが、この看板だけは火の手から逃れられたようで、今回工事前の倉庫整理の際に発見されました。９０年前の親水公園を知る「さ」の字は今日もささやカフェ＆スペースを見守ってくれています。
