Measured’s design approach focused on maximizing natural light and spatial openness, key desires of the client. A pivotal aspect of the renovation focused on enhancing the east-facing morning and mid-afternoon light, pivotal to the client's lifestyle. This was achieved through vaulting windows seamlessly connected with cascading skylights, strategically positioned to harness daylight even during the darkest winter days. Structural enhancements included the removal of heavy support beams in the main living area, further amplifying the sense of openness and luminosity.

These changes not only redefined the livability and spatial quality of the interior but ensured natural light became a defining feature throughout the day. Beyond interior upgrades, the exterior underwent meticulous revitalization. Existing trellis work was restored and extended, creating an inviting pathway that leads visitors into the home’s forecourt and surrounding gardens. To modernize the façade while ensuring durability, corten steel cladding was selected for its distinctive warmth, patina and texture.

Sustainability was a cornerstone of the project. Retaining the original concrete foundation minimized construction waste and reduced the project’s overall greenhouse gas emissions. Locally sourced materials such as Vancouver Island cedar played a pivotal role, while locally manufactured windows and skylights supported the regional economy. Emphasizing the play of light, Paddock House immerses its residents in the changing rhythms of daylight, enriching their experience of space and time throughout the day and across seasons.
