The project is located in a peony garden in north suburb of Luoyang, the most ancient capital city of China, which is also renowned for peony flower. The purpose of the project is to transform specific area of the garden into a ground for assembly and working spaces of artists and cultural facilities. It is consisted of four individual pavilions along an existing 150 meters’ long outdoor veranda, two on each side. The first two pavilions constructed are the gallery for workshop and exhibition (pavilion 1) and the teahouse/lounge room (pavilion 2), located in the linear cedar forest to the north of the veranda.
The two pavilions are independent from and in contrast with each other. Pavilion 1 is an inward cavernous singular space constructed by the commonly used concrete block. The main structure of pavilion 2 is a primitive full glazed steel frame work against a long L-shaped wall. The room is entirely exposed to the north side of the wall. Both of the buildings are blended with the trees. Pavilion 3 is a glazed steel structure, partly coated by aluminum panels. The building is dedicated to daily and cultural activities such as dining, seminar, lecture and the stay of the guests.
The corridors on the first floor establish the spatial feature while producing more outdoor spaces in the building. Pavilion 4 is a free standing object in the boundary between the peony field and the cedar trees. It splits up to two halves to set up a dramatic fissure, leaving a space for two existing trees and forming an intimate tie between the interior and the nature. The external walls are made of concrete blocks and brought up an identity through its tectonic feature. It can be used as small office with living space.
