Rice Villa celebrates Cambodia's rich cultural heritage through designs inspired by local winemaking traditions and the histories of Angkor Wat. Its interconnected cylindrical buildings blend elements of sra peang, rice warehouses, and Angkor Wat skylights. The essence of rural Khmer dwellings is captured with a modern twist, featuring a bamboo envelope that offers framed views of the nearby neighborhood.

Functionalities of a Khmer Villa

Inspired by traditional Khmer stilted houses, Rice Villa's private living spaces rise above the ground, while the open first floor reflects Khmer rural culture, blending living, dining, kitchen, and courtyard zones. This fosters connections between guests and local farmers, facilitating “farm-to-barrel” winemaking activities. At this intersection of agriculture, winemaking, and architecture, Rice Villa redefines hospitality as a platform for cultural exchange.

Contextualized Sustainability

The perforated bamboo facade demonstrates the innovative use of a once undervalued and renewable material, highlighting the villa’s commitment to sustainability. Traditionally, it was also used as straws to drink sra peang from the jar itself. Parametric design ensures a facade that balances light, ventilation, and thermal comfort, a seamless dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. Concrete and terrazzo finishes provide durability while preserving the villa’s vernacular character and cultural authenticity.

Community-Centric Construction

With a strong emphasis on local engagement throughout the construction process, we purchased materials locally and collaborated with local artisans to incorporate traditional and modern building techniques that honors diminishing local intangible Khmer cultures and supports local economies.
