Rose des Vents redefines student housing by combining social impact, architectural innovation, and environmental leadership. Developed by UTILE within Montreal’s pioneering LEED-ND Platinum Technopôle Angus eco-district, the project provides over 160 students with affordable, sustainable homes designed for community living. Anchored between a lively urban plaza and an edible forest, the building’s design fosters a seamless dialogue between private and public space. Ground-floor common areas—cafés, collaborative workspaces, and a bike workshop—extend into the pedestrian realm, promoting social interactions and vibrant, round-the-clock activity. Architecturally, the project’s defining feature is its dynamic second skin: a veil of expanded aluminum panels, arranged in an informal composition. This permeable façade modulates light, preserves privacy, and offers ever-changing views across seasons and times of day. Behind it, a robust building envelope achieves an effective R27.5 thermal resistance without thermal bridging, significantly improving energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Connected to the eco-district’s innovative shared energy loop and rainwater management systems, Rose des Vents dramatically reduces heating and cooling demands. High-efficiency mechanical systems, heat recovery, and durable, locally sourced aluminum materials reinforce the project’s environmental commitment, ensuring long-term resilience and low carbon impact. More than a residence, Rose des Vents serves as an active urban catalyst—where students not only live but contribute to a thriving, inclusive, and low-carbon community.
