The school of Davos Platz is a pioneering example of sustainable architecture in the Alps. Instead of demolishing the existing building from the 1960s, it was transformed and extended with an innovative timber construction. The additional structure fits over the old building and encloses it with a new energy-efficient shell. This allowed 40% of the existing structure to be reused and the embodied energy to be preserved. The general aim was to minimize the CO2 footprint by saving the existing structure and using regional, renewable building materials such as wood and cork.
