Responding to the demands for music and art talents in the Great Bay Area and drawing on the successful experience of CUHK-Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Conservatory of Music (also known as CUHK-Shenzhen School of Music ) seeks to develop into an international innovative institution of music and arts by incorporating the advanced school-running practices from top universities worldwide and embracing the ethos of "openness" exclusive to the city of Shenzhen. Committed to fulfilling educational and cultural needs, the project serves as a campus for cultivating music and art talents in the Greater Bay Area, as well as a public cultural facility to cater to the spiritual and cultural aspirations of the citizens in Shenzhen, and the Greater Bay Area at large.
Different from conventional norms and megastructure thinking, the design creates an interconnected complex through innovative combinations of distinctive buildings. While maintaining the integrity of the campus, the design emphasizes diversity and showcases the unique "vitality" and "personality" of the art school. The spatial layout follows a pattern of "one axis, two areas, three groups, and two squares" by incorporating the "connecting corridors" as the "skeleton". By blending Chinese and Western educational concepts, the project encourages students to embrace life positively and strives to shape future communities through innovative urban planning ideas and solutions.
The schematic design prioritizes sustainability by implementing BIM technology comprehensively in the design process, adopting passive design strategies like natural daylighting and ventilation optimization, energy-efficient building envelopes, and green rainwater infrastructure. Additionally, solar systems are used as complementary energy sources to maximize the use of renewable energy, striving to reduce energy consumption and operational costs.
