Turrell has been experimenting with these extraordinary sanctuaries since the 1970s, playing with light and the idea of the ethereal as a tangible material in some of the farthest corners of the world. From the inside, the Skyspace pavilion’s open ceiling appears to flatten and frame the sky, while concealed lighting subtly shifts the viewer’s perception of colour, distance, shape, and density. The building is a permeable pavilion, that allows natural light to come in and the nature surrounding it to be noticed.

During nighttime, the pavilion emanates a soft light in nature. The Skyspace is structured exclusively by its timber facade, therefore, the perception of the whole ceiling is kept, without any central columns blocking it. The chamber is a manifestation of Turrell’s devotion to exploring space and light, an invitation to contemplation and wonder. Our studio worked directly with Turrell to achieve the exacting specifications and razor-thin edges required for the ceiling to create these striking effects, while imbuing the structure with the same look and feel of the island’s other buildings; our Brazilian studio’s DNA is evident in the vertical wooden slats of the Skyspace exterior, which conjure a continuous dance of light and shadow throughout the day.

Skyspace Amarta is also a PEFC Project certified by Ventura Timberwork of Singapore. This means that all the timber used to create Skyspace Amarta can be traced back to sustainably managed forests where the timber was sourced. On the island, guests can retreat into Turrell’s Skyspace, bask in its infinite splendour, and experience the magnanimous spirit of Fari Islands, — making it a haven within a haven — as the resort embodies sustainability, alongside artistic expression and sensorial enlightenment.
