Taman Jurong Community Club is a community building that provides public recreational and communal amenities for residents living in highrise high density housing in this district. The existing CC is designed by our firm 10 years ago. It is well utilized and additional space is needed. Due to lack of land, the Extension project is built over the existing open basketball court. The Main design issue is how to retain the concept and spatial experience of existing CC which is open, informal and tropical, and translate this concept in a compact vertical setting.
The close proximity to the existing CC also poses many design and technical challenges The Extension is lifted to retain the basketball court which also serves as an extension to the existing plaza for large scale public functions. The Extension is separated from the existing CC by a narrow vertical space in order to retain sufficient functional width for the basketball court and new building. This space is covered by layered skylight for natural ventilation and weather protection. A sun-shading, rain water collection with vertical planting system is developed as an art installation to give an artistic yet functional feature to the building.
With the use of glass for facade facing the existing CC, the visual field of the existing CC will remain unblocked. A well detailed sunscreen for sunshade and glare control is introduced without compromising the visual transparency of the whole complex. The Extension provides large flexible multifunctional space for meetings, lectures and performance, a space standard that complements the exiting CC. The roof scape is designed for gathering and performance, The industrial detailing and aesthetic expression brought back the industrial heritage of Taman Jurong as the pioneer industrial district in the economic development of Singapore, with added welcoming and delightful space for the community.
