ICON, leader of advanced construction technologies pioneering large-scale 3D printing, in partnership with Lennar, one of the nation’s leading homebuilders, is building the largest community of 3D-printed homes in the world. Each home is co-designed by the renowned architecture firm BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group. The first homes will be fully complete in 2023. For the first time, we’re witnessing a fleet of robots build an entire community of homes. It’s the first project of its kind to take additive construction vis-à-vis 3D printing and stretch its capabilities in ways that we haven’t seen before all in effort to solve the housing crisis.
Over 1 billion people on Earth do not have access to adequate housing, and our goal at ICON is make housing accessible to all by utilizing the speedy yet precise nature of our Vulcan 3D printers to create homes that are not only architecturally riveting but also technologically sound, safe, and durable from a construction perspective. ICON homes can be produced in a shorter amount of time all the while being energy efficient and capable of withstanding extreme weather thanks to a special blend of our proprietary concrete (called “lavacrete”).
It is imperative that we find a way to shelter ourselves without compromising the planet we live on, but also addressing the lack of housing. Here at ICON, we don’t want something that is such a pressing matter to become another discussion point that doesn’t yield any action. By embarking on this journey, we are bridging the gap between dreams and reality. The 100-home 3D-printed community located right outside of Austin is just the starting point. Our technology and this community is the first example of the benefits of automated construction at scale.
