The Hat House Photos and Film

The Hat House is named after a Swedish children's book in which a group of children live in a giant hat. It is a small timber cabin designed by Tina Bergman for a young family, situated in a birch forest in the mountains of western Sweden. To photograph and film it, I spent 4 days in the area. We deliberately picked autumn time, knowing that the birch trees would have all turned yellow. In the images I wanted to portray the house in a very natural way so rather than posing, staging and styling, I just spent time there with Tina and her client, eating meals together, going on hikes in the hills around the home and playing with the dog, all the while carrying my camera to document how the house is used. The context was critical to both the homeowner and the architect, so I have included her images where you see very little (or none at all) of the house, to show the surroundings. In the short film we made, I paired footage of the cabin with footage of the landscape to further highlight this. The film is very important to the project.
