The Library makes up the missing link for the area, being a significant and attractive cultural institution placed centrally in the neighbourhood’s awareness. The goal was to create a space that is more than just a place you go to find books – the building also works as a village hall, a community center and an urban space uniting the neighborhood – an urban livingroom. To ensure a sense of community, local users and employees have participated in workshops throughout the process, contributing with opinions and ideas – for instance, the location of the concert hall at the top of the building.

The building consists of 4 golden boxes displaced on top of each other, like a stack of books. At ground floor, there is a children’s library, then a youth library, a library for adults and on top, a concert hall. The different volumes are connected with staircases and the space between the boxes is multi-purpose areas. Three democratic principles - openness, accessibility and transparency – have been at the core of the solution. The building has entrances from both north and south, making the foyer act as an urban passage for the neighbourhood.
