Offering an iconic destination to residents of the city and visitors alike, the Sorol Art Museum is part of the Gyo-Dong 7 Public Park, located in the center of Gangneung, one of the most scenic regions in Korea with a dramatic sea and mountain backdrop. This park scape, which is also available to the public, connects to the art center grounds with the ground floor of the building, is sitting on a naturally high plateau (elevation of +62.0m above sea level) with panoramic views. The building is configured around a courtyard, organized into three main volumes; the north wing, a large, cantilevered pavilion gallery; the “cube,” an immaculate volume housing galleries, offices, and library; and a transparent pavilion housing the entrance and amenities.
