Taking into account the relatively small landed footprint available, the key design concept was to assure a sufficient living space for the client’s family by maximizing space utilization. The house is placed on a ‘Π’ shaped layout while at the center of the void space lies a rectangular atrium that runs for the entire two-storey height of the house. Linking all the spaces together, the atrium floods the spaces with natural light giving a bright and spacious feel while providing a sense of privacy to the individual spaces that are arranged around it.

Centerpiece to the atrium is the staircase that provides access to the top storey of the house. A significant area of the entire facade of the house is covered by expanded aluminum mesh, especially at the top storey. The aluminum mesh not only provides the necessary privacy to the rooms while allowing visibility, but is also effective in controlling and enhancing the natural light penetration and air circulation. The combination of the atrium along with the expanded aluminum facades contribute to the bioclimatic character of the house by creating a beneficiary microclimate for the residents, working along with the central courtyard that is defined by the three closed sides of the atrium.
