Tower of Time, the large-scale installation designed by the architect Zhu Xiaodi is the physical structure for artist Bingyi’s cross-media art project of the same title, featured as the centerpiece for the 2020 Nanjing Youth Olympic Art and Lighting Festival. This installation is the world’s first coordinated projection on 28 large screens. The Tower of Time is a "light architecture" that employs light and information flow to generate sensational flux that transforms space, projection, performance and structure.
With projection as the creative medium, the architecture takes the form of light. The Tower of Time is a multi-media building that combines various traditional Chinese building types, such as pavilion, terrace, and tower. It functions as a comprehensive stage that can incorporate striking operatic performances and art exhibitions. The Tower of Time constitutes a structure connected by multiple layers of constantly swirling disks and screens to present a mysterious spatial relationship between projection and viewing.
It transforms a concrete structure into an abstract spatial experience. During the day it can be seen as a white pavilion souring into the sky; at night it is a magical stage and generates memorizing images and sensations. At any given time, the Tower guides the audience to look into the infinite sky to feel the sublime of time and space. The structure utilizes the most advanced projection technology that exists today. Eight different teams and over 40 scientists and technicians worked on designing the comprehensive projection program that was displayed on various screens in different sizes and orientations.
It is one of the most complicated and innovative multi-media projects where light projection re-defines the genre of architecture to date.
