Designed by Eero Saarinen in 1962, the TWA Flight Center epitomizes the glamour and optimism of the Jet Age. The treasured 216,000-square-foot terminal has been restored and reborn as the lobby of TWA Hotel. This restoration, the construction of two new hotel wings behind it and the underground addition of a 50,000-square-foot events center sit at the heart of JFK Airport. From the moment they arrive, visitors find themselves immersed in the ethos of 1962. The lobby areas include the original chili-pepper red Sunken Lounge and Paris Café at the mezzanine level, as well as retail spaces. The two new low-rise hotel buildings provide a neutral foil to the historic terminal. Connected to the terminal through the original red-carpeted flight tubes, the guestrooms are ultra-quiet through a specially-engineered 4.5-inch-thick curtain wall. The Hughes Wing is capped with the Pool Bar featuring a rooftop infinity-edge pool, restaurant/bar and observation deck. The room interiors restore the excitement for air travel by maximizing comfort during a short airport stay. Sixties-inspired elements include Saarinen-designed Knoll furnishings, a martini bar, and a vintage rotary phone. Custom furnishings and lighting — like the wood trim, which follows along the ceiling edge and softly illuminates the room — reference midcentury design. Many of the beds are positioned to let guests enjoy the exciting rhythm of the runway or the glory of Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center. The 50,000-square-foot event space has been developed as a state-of-the-art gathering space, imbued with the glamour of the period in American history when the Jet Age turned the world into a global village for the first time. Conceived of as a posthumous collaboration with the modern master, Saarinen, alongside the likes of Warren Platner, Raymond Loewy, and Charles and Ray Eames, the TWA event space breathes new life into an American landmark.
