Two Adams is a new multi-family housing project located in the Second Ward of Houston, Texas. The project takes advantage of increased density by transforming an existing suburban lot into courtyard style infill housing. Previously a single-family home now sits a collection of six individual two-story houses, dispersed around three courtyards. Each unit has access to both a street entrance and a communal courtyard. The project’s façade extends past the roof line to create a sheltered, occupiable third floor deck with views of downtown Houston. The elevated outdoor area creates new exterior private space, replacing the suburban model of a yard surrounding an individual home. The project navigates each building’s proximity to one another with careful consideration of aperture placement for privacy and cross-ventilation. Local materials that are light in color have been selected to reduce carbon emissions and keep the building cooler on hot and humid days.
