"This exhibit was devised after an impromptu visit to the International UFO Museum in Roswell, New Mexico. A simple stop for fuel on a roadtrip, turned into a visit to the Museum which grew into a deep interest into the unique institution. The museum is housed in an old movie theatre and contains a sparse and eclectic collection of artifacts, documents and artwork pertaining to all aspects of UFO stories. An immediate notion was conjured to somehow add to the developing story presented by the Museum.Creating the foundation for the exhibition, twenty eight undergraduate architecture students at Texas Tech University developed proposals for a new UFO museum for Roswell.
Models and presentation boards were created to be included in a new temporary exhibition at the UFO museum. This additional project extended the learning experiences for the students and provided a venue for a dialogue about architecture in a venue that was new to both the students and the patrons of the museum.The exhibit was self funded, and therefore consisted of a simply plywood and threaded rod construction, prepared as an armature to support the 28 models and 28 mounted drawings by the students.
All the plywood, rods, mounting arms and legs were fabricated offsite and then brought to the museum at the end of operation hours on a Friday evening. Two professors and eight students completed the installation in one shift of ten hours, preparing the exhibit to be open for the public the next day. After a two month duration, the exhibit was disassembled and the architectural models became part of the permanent collection at the museum, all being added to the growing lore of UFO history."
